Eugene Kennedy`s otherwise excellent piece on Catholicism was spoiled for me when he wrote: ”It was once fitting for a Catholic archbishop to live in a handsome brick residence as splendid as that of any banker or government official.”

It was never fitting to choose respectability over righteousness. Victor Hugo knew this. In ”Les Miserables,” his bishop (of candlestick fame) chose Christianity over professionalism.
