Mike Royko`s recent column chiding a Catholic bishop for his criticism of Gov. Mario Cuomo`s pro-abortion stance is another instance of the popular ploy of some in the media to portray the abortion debate as a Catholic issue.
Pretending that opposition to abortion is a Catholic issue obscures the fact that aborting human life is a humane question, not a religious one. Royko attempted to reduce the abortion question to jest by stating that Ed Koch didn`t try to pass laws banning pork when he was mayor of New York. There is, it would seem to even the most detached observer, a vast difference between eating pork and destroying unborn babies.
