On turning 40 (last year): ”I`m not upset at being 40, like some of my friends. In some ways, I think I look younger than I did a couple of years ago. Maybe it`s because I let my hair grow longer. It has changed me quite a lot; it`s a softer look.
”When you`re young, you have to work at being a real sophisticated lady. When you get to be 40, you think, `Oh, well, what the hell.` ”
Favorite designers: ”Yves Saint Laurent, always the favorite. Azzedine Alaia, Geoffrey Beene. They are the three I wear most. I know others, but I wear these.”
On her lipstick: ”There`s just one shade, `Mon Rouge` (my red). Take it or leave it.
”It`s the best red possible, a true red. It stains the lips. If you go out to lunch, at the end of lunch you still have your red lips on. It doesn`t run. It`s not too shiny. Women who really love red lipstick know that I`ve really worked on it.” (It`s $20 at Marshall Field & Co.)
Beauty philosophy: ”Highlight what you like; downplay what`s not so great. You have to feel secure. You have to take steps that make you feel good. I do my beauty mark every morning to emphasize it.”
Beauty basics: ”I now have a compact, but there is just one shade of powder-mine. There will be a mascara and liner, but only in black. No blush. Strong eyes, strong mouth, that`s enough.” (The compact with translucent powder is $125 at Saks Fifth Avenue; mascara and liner come there in May.)
