The Lake County Teen Court (”Kids tough as jury of their peers,” April 23) deserves credit for both making teens responsible to a jury of their peers and providing students with first-hand knowledge of our judicial system. However, I take exception to one of its common disciplinary measures: that of writing essays as punishment for wrongdoing.

In a time when it seems difficult to encourage students to read and write, shouldn`t educators and disciplinarians stop sending the message that research and writing be viewed as punishment?
