According to rock music critic Greg Kot, writing about Madonna`s Houston concert in the May 6 Tribune, ”Nothing is 2nd rate as Madonna opens her . . . tour.” Nothing, that is, except decency in a civilized society.

According to Kot, Madonna`s lack of musical talent is inconsequential-she is a sex bomb, whose show is ”about self-expression, about being yourself and damn the critics.” ”Don`t go for second best, baby,” Madonna sings.

When a singer is third-rate, does it matter to a critic? When her material encompasses the awkward area of self-abuse-described by Kot as

”seductive and hilarious”-should it matter?

The critic should be aware of the young people, America`s future, hanging on to every inferior note and phrasing of a ”to hell with it all” Madonna.
