Franz Beckenbauer, who will retire as West Germany`s coach at the end of the World Cup, said he will ”definitely not” become the coach of the U.S. team as has been widely rumored.

He is interested, however, in playing a role in the organization of the 1994 World Cup in the U.S.

”They will have to ask me, but I can help in many ways,” said Beckenbauer, who played for the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League after captaining West Germany`s 1974 World Cup champions.

”I spent five years in the U.S., and I loved the country.”

Beckenbauer`s assessment of the U.S. performance here?

”They played like an amateur team in the first game (against Czechoslovakia) and like professionals against Austria and Italy,” he said.

”They need to play a lot of international matches in the next four years and against teams like Germany and England.”
