I have often disagreed with Supreme Court decisions of the past several years, but never have I been so vehemently opposed as with the recent decision in the Nancy Cruzan case.
It is inhuman for the court to deny Nancy`s parents the right to have her feeding tubes removed after they have agonizingly watched her deteriorate in a persistant vegetative state for seven years. The court ruled in this manner because Nancy had no written statement concerning her ”right to die”; how many at 25 years of age do?
It is every parent`s nightmare that such a tragedy should befall their child. The court, in its ”infinite wisdom,” analyzed away any mercy or compassion for a loving, long-suffering family to make the right decision for a now-incompetent child.
The very thought of nine strangers making such a personal decision for me or my loved ones leaves me with a cold shudder.
