Applause, applause to the Illinois state legislature! It has actually passed legislation that directly deals with the landfill shortage Illinois is facing.

The law, which took effect on July 1, forbids a landfill from accepting lawn and garden wastes-organic items like grass, leaves and twigs. In their infinite wisdom, the legislators felt that by refusing this type of trash-the kind that degrades within a year or two-our landfills will have more space for the non-degradable wastes (glass, aluminum and plastic) that already take up over 50 percent of available landfill space.

I am really glad that the legislature has not concerned itself with Illinois` other pressing problems-education funding, tax relief and health care. We might be better off because of it.
