Joe Torre, out of uniform since fired in 1984 as Atlanta Braves manager, will be named the St. Louis Cardinals` manager on Wednesday, a television station reported Monday night.
Station KSDK, quoting ”a highly reliable source,” said Torre will get the job from which Whitey Herzog resigned on July 6. Torre is a former St. Louis player, earning the National League Most Valuable Player award in 1971. Torre, a California Angels broadcaster, told KSDK he had interviewed for the job with General Manager Dal Maxvill but had not been notified of the club`s decision. Maxvill told KSDK only that ”nothing`s done.”
Others interviewed for the job included Milwaukee Brewers coach Don Baylor, Philadelphia Phillies coach Hal Lanier and Atlanta Braves coach Pat Corrales.
