The recent guest column on Japanese-U.S.A. relations by Michael Colopy was certainly timely and informative, appearing on the 45th anniversary of Gen. Douglas MacArthur`s orders to occupied Japan on Aug. 15, 1945.

Mr. Colopy misses the bull`s-eye, though, when he says U.S.-Japan relations are on a severe decline. In fact, a very recent Tokyo Broadcasting/ CBS poll showed that although Japan and the U.S. see each other as their

”top competitors,” ”friendly feelings” still prevail, perhaps not unlike the Cubs and Cardinals after a torrid weekend series.

History has proven that nations can remain friendly and cooperative while still competing-thus West Germany, Japan, Korea, Canada, et al.
