Business executives are more pessimistic about the economy than at any time since 1980, when the nation suffered a brief but deep recession. The Conference Board`s Measure of Business Confidence showed that a majority of executives believe economic conditions worsened during the past six months, and almost half expect further deterioration in the next six months. The board`s index of confidence dropped to 40 in the third quarter, from 46 in the first quarter and 48 in the second. A reading below 50 indicates that pessimists outnumber optimists.
