In response to Joan Beck`s column ”Are homosexuals a `family`?”, one must ask, ”What is society`s fundamental interest in heterosexual marriage?” Can this interest not include an expanded (not ”diluted”) concept of marriage? Society can derive the same benefits from nontraditional unions that it derives from traditional unions, with the added benefit of a nurturing place for children who are not wanted by their biological parents.
Aside from the practical benefits of marriage that Ms. Beck lists, there is the emotional importance of making a public statement of love and commitment.
For my part, regardless of society`s opinions of me and my love relationship, I refuse to accept the perceived superiority of my heterosexual counterparts.
