The Tribune`s report on my ”denial” of allegations that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. plagiarized his Boston University dissertation is shabby journalism at its ebullient best (or worst). I assume you made the judgment that it was irrelevant that my defense of King`s scholarship was written three weeks before the evidence of plagiarism was brought to light.

Plagiarism isn`t the only form of scholarly dishonesty. Prior to writing the letter you quoted from, I asked the individual (John Reed) making the allegations about King to back up his assertions-which he declined to do. I responded with the facts as I then had them.

I raise the dunce cap you have given me in your honor. I`m just an academic administrator trying to keep the story straight-and no match at all for reporters who can ignore chronology and withhold critical data as suits their convenience.
