The 1990-91 Chicagoland Prep Conference basketball title race was supposed to be a two-team battle between Holy Trinity and St. Benedict, with Providence-St. Mel a distant third.
To be sure, there`s still plenty of time for the prognosticators to say
”I told you so,” but for the time being St. Mel sits alone at the top of the six-team conference with a 4-0 record in league play.
The action shifted into the 1991 portion of the season Wednesday with St. Benedict (6-7, 3-1) taking a 61-57 decision over visiting Holy Trinity (7-6, 2-1) to take over sole possession of second place and cut into idle St. Mel`s lead.
”Any time you get St. Benedict into a gym with either Holy Trinity or St. Mel it`s going to be a great game,” said St. Benedict`s second-year coach Rich Mendoza, a graduate of St. Gregory, also of the Chicagoland Prep Conference, and a former coach at Holy Trinity.
St. Benedict, whose only loss in league play was to St. Mel in December, built a 39-32 halftime lead, trailed by one after three and staged a fourth-quarter rally to emerge with the victory. Jesse Drain, Jason Brozynski and Dave Wilch all finished with 12 points for the winners.
Senn Tournament-Lincoln Park (6-4) topped Von Steuben 60-40 with Keith Boclair and Ozell Smith each contributing 13 points and Diamond Dyer adding 11 points and 10 rebounds.
