The Bravo cable channel will air the American broadcast premiere of Charles Mingus` epic jazz symphony ”Epitaph” at 9 p.m. Friday. The piece-comprising 19 sections and nearly 4,000 bars of music-represented a life`s work for Mingus, who died in 1979.
Mingus` music was discovered after his death by his widow, Sue Graham Mingus, who commissioned Gunther Schuller to edit the score.
A truncated version was performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival last summer.
Bravo will broadcast the complete world premiere performance, conducted by Schuller in Lincoln Center`s Alice Tully Hall in 1989.
Performers include trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and pianist Sir Roland Hanna. The program will be rebroadcast at 10 p.m. Jan. 27.
