It was a week of surprises on the music charts, with a sudden end to Janet Jackson`s reign on the singles list and a significant shakeup in the album rankings.
In a real upset, Jackson`s powerhouse dance hit ”Love Will Never Do
(Without You)” lost its No. 1 title-after just one week as champ-to Surface`s sweet ballad ”The First Time,” which moved all the way up from No. 4.
”The First Time” is the second big pop success for Surface, which scored a No. 5 hit in 1988 with ”Shower Me With Your Love.” Helping Surface`s cause this time around is the across-the-board radio support for
”First Time,” which this week moved up to No. 2 on the adult contemporary chart (trailing only Stevie B`s ”Because I Love You”); it also ranks No. 2 on the R&B list (behind Pebbles` ”Love Makes Things Happen”) after hitting No. 1 last week.
Over on the LP list, the champ still is Vanilla Ice`s ”To the Extreme,” but there was a major reshuffling within the Top 5. Finally losing ground was M.C. Hammer`s record-setting ”Please Hammer Don`t Hurt `Em,” which slipped to No. 4 after many months of domination as either No. 1 or No. 2. Moving ahead of Hammer were Madonna`s ”The Immaculate Collection” (up from No. 3 to No. 2) and the novelty record ”The Simpsons Sing the Blues” (from No. 4 to No. 3).
Look for ”The First Time” to repeat as singles champ next week, though there already are two challengers that could put on some pressure: C&C Music Factory`s ”Gonna Make You Sweat,” which jumped from No. 6 to No. 3 this week, and Ralph Tresvant`s ”Sensitivity,” up from No. 5 to No. 4. Losing momentum were Damn Yankees` ”High Enough,” which slipped from No. 3 to No. 5, and Vanilla Ice`s ”Play That Funky Music,” which stalled at No. 7 this week and now is unlikely to repeat the No. 1 success of his recent hit ”Ice Ice Baby.”
Elsewhere in the Top 20, the biggest fireworks were provided by Whitney Houston`s ballad ”All the Man That I Need,” which zipped from No. 18 to No. 11 in just its sixth week on the charts. Other big movers: Warrant`s ”I Saw Red” (up from No. 23 to No. 17), Celine Dion`s ”Where Does My Heart Beat Now” (from No. 24 to No. 18), and L.L. Cool J`s ”Around the Way Girl” (from No. 27 to No. 20). All are now on track for future No. 1 honors.
This week, there are two pick hits: Gloria Estefan`s appealing ballad
”Coming Out of the Dark,” the first release from her upcoming ”Into the Light” LP; and Mariah Carey`s danceable ”Someday,” which burst onto the charts last week at a phenomenal No. 37 and should move quickly to No. 1.
