Teaching kids to respect the environment is simple. Start with this rule: Throw away as little as possible. That means buying few, or no, disposables, especially non-renewable, non-degradable resources (such as plastics and plastic-coated papers).
When packing lunches, remember:
1. Buy a lunch box, thermal cooler or washable fabric bag.
2. Use resealable sandwich containers instead of plastic wrap. Instead of cellophane-wrapped cookies and chips, buy big bags and seal portions in reusable tubs.
3. Instead of small yogurt cartons and aseptic juice packs (largely non-degradable materials), buy large containers (preferably recyclable bottles or cans), then pour portions into single-serve drink containers. (Best are the kind you can freeze.)
