Following the lead of its neighbor to the north, Wheeling may soon offer owners of single-family homes the option of a second weekly garbage pickup during the growing season.
Buffalo Grove approved a similar ”subscription” service Tuesday, about a month after devising the plan. Both subscription services would begin April 1.
Wheeling homeowners already get two weekly trash pickups from December through March. But in the other months, one of those two weekly pickups is for yard waste only.
Under the proposed plan, one garbage pickup and one yard-waste pickup would continue each week between April 1 and Nov. 30. But for an additional $2.95 a month, a homeowner could choose to have a second weekly garbage pickup.
Wheeling homeowners now pay a base fee of $13.48 a month for year-around refuse pickup, said Village Manager Craig Anderson.
Wheeling trustees are expected to vote on the proposal March 4.
Both municipalities contract with Buffalo Grove-Wheeling Disposal, a division of Waste Management Corp.
Although most board members seemed to like the proposal, Village President Sheila Schultz expressed reservations.
”I think we are creating a monster for a very few people,” Schultz said. ”I foresee a lot of confusion, a lot of phone calls to the village.
”It would be a step back in the whole solid-waste disposal education
(process).”
Trustee William Rogers disagreed. ”If they (the homeowners) are willing to pay extra money for the service,” he said, ”I don`t see any problem with it.”
