Just like comedian Rodney Dangerfield, the soul trio Surface can`t seem to get any respect or attention from the media.
That`s surprising, since Surface has proven to be a hitmaking machine. The trio recently scored a No. 1 hit single with ”The First Time,” a ballad from its Columbia Records album ”3 Deep.” In 1989, the band hit the Top 5 chart with another ballad, ”Shower Me With Your Love.” The ”2nd Wave”
album sold more than a million copies.
”Most of our hype is in the music,” says instrumentalist Pic Conley.
You could say Surface has several public relations strikes against it. The group dresses in sophisticated suits and nautical outfits-perhaps too tame an image. And Surface is known primarily for its ballads and has suffered from a lack of radio-ready tunes.
