Frank A. Donaldson, retired chairman and former chief executive of Donaldson Co., manufacturer of air filtration systems, died of cancer Saturday in his home in the Phoenix suburb of Carefree. He was 71.

Mr. Donaldson, who also had a home in Excelsior, Minn., was connected with the Minneapolis-based company, founded by his father, for more than 50 years and helped build it into an organization with operations in 10 countries.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; two sons; a brother and sister, and four grandchildren.
