A former Indiana police officer man charged in the hit-and-run accident that killed a South Holland man was released on a personal recognizance bond over the weekend, officials said.
Russell M. Bergner, 57, of Schererville, Ind., appeared before a judge in the Markham branch of Cook County Circuit Court, where he was released on a $50,000 I-bond, police said.
Bergner, a former Knox, Ind., police officer, is accused of striking Neil P. Smith, 31, of South Holland as Smith walked along 159th Street in the south suburb Thursday.
