Efforts to ”reforest” Plainfield, where an estimated 4,000 trees were destroyed by last August`s tornado, will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday with a tree- planting ceremony in Village Green Park.
The program, sponsored by the Illinois Department of Conservation, has been dubbed ”Tornado Releaf.”
The three trees donated by the department to be planted Saturday were grown from seeds of a sycamore that ”sheltered George Washington as he traveled from Philadelphia to his military headquarters in Newburgh, N.Y., in 1782,” according to the Conservation Department.
The tornado caused an estimated $200 million damage, but the damaged trees were not included in that loss total.
