Childs` second album is a triumph, even better than her 1988 debut. Her atmospheric music is the mature expression of a vision that Tanita Tikaram`s potential only hints at. Her smoky voice possesses the soulfulness of Phoebe Snow (”Got To Go Now”) and the stark sincerity of Janis Ian (”House of Hope”). Yet her artistry is such that it can take a quiet melody like
”Heaven`s Gate” and give it the transcendent grandeur that the title implies. She dares to be a ”vocalist” in a day when some singers are content to be computer-enhanced varnish on producers` pre-fab dance dross.
