No charges are expected to be filed against a railroad police officer for Chicago and North Western Transportation Co. who shot and killed a man Wednesday while trying to arrest him, Chicago police said.
Gerald Mock, the railroad officer, saw two men removing boxes of clothing from a boxcar near 16th Street and Ashland Avenue, said Harrison Area Violent Crimes Sgt. William Rooney.
”The officer saw the two men put the boxes on top of their car and begin to leave,” Rooney said. ”Mock called his office by radio and said he was going to arrest them after one box fell off and the men stopped to pick it up.”
Mock, who was in uniform, told the two they were under arrest, and one man began to walk away, Rooney said.
”The second man began to get back into the vehicle. (Mock), who had drawn his revolver, reached inside (the car) to remove the keys. The man pushed him and the gun discharged accidentally,” Rooney said.
Michael Skida, 34, whose last known address was on the Northwest Side, was pronounced dead on arrival at the medical examiner`s office, Rooney said. The second man, Douglas Wolf, 37, of South Woodlawn Avenue, was arrested and charged with felony theft, police said.
In another case, four people were charged with first-degree murder after a gang fight on a northbound CTA bus at Wilson Avenue and Sheridan Road late Wednesday left a 16-year-old youth dead of stab wounds, police said.
Belmont Area Violent Crimes Sgt. Paul Carroll identified two of them as Anthony Thomas, 20, of 4753 N. Clark St., and Duane Smith, 23, of 821 N. Cleveland St.
Two 16-year-olds, a male and a female, also were charged with murder as adults but police regulations prohibit the release of their names, Carroll said.
The dead youth was identified by the medical examiner as Anthony Ellens, of 928 W. Leland Ave.
”This was not random violence on the CTA,” Carroll said. ”It was a dispute between groups who knew each other.”
