Mutual Benefit monitored: New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio said the state is monitoring the financial problems of troubled Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co. of Newark ”very carefully.” He said the state will ”make whatever decisions are necessary” to protect the interests of policyholders. The Record of Hackensack, N.J., reported that state officials are planning to seize control of the company, the nation`s 18th-largest life and health insurer. State officials would not confirm or deny the report, but Florio said in a statement officials are holding discussions with officials of Mutual Benefit.
