To read the quote (July 23) from the Du Page Airport`s director of communications calling $9 million in federal funding ”a nice piece of change” simply emphasizes the mentality of those bureaucrats who do not have to be held accountable to the people.
Where does Mr. Keleher think the $9 million came from? From some philanthropic benefactor? How about from the paychecks and pocketbooks of hard working Americans? From people who might wonder what has possessed the Airport Authority to decide to build a golf course for $15 million? From people who might wonder why the Airport Authority is in the process of building yet another golf course in Du Page County? From people who may never pick up a golf club in their entire life?
And the spokesman for the Airport Authority says that the debt incurred for the golf course will be retired through the application of the fees paid by the players. If that is the case, what sort of funding will be used to defray the cost of operating the course?
If the airport needs to be expanded to accommodate increased traffic, well and good. Tell us, Mr. Keleher, how will an 18 percent increase in the budget do anything for all of the people of Du Page and Kane Counties but help a few construction companies and course developers?
