– Player of the week: San Diego State`s Marshall Faulk. Even though it was only against Pacific, the freshman running back set an NCAA record by rushing for 386 yards on 37 carries, scoring 7 touchdowns in the Aztecs` 55-34 victory. Indiana`s Anthony Thompson owned the previous one-game mark with 377 yards.
– Game of the week: Baylor`s 16-14 victory over Colorado. The Bears` Santana Dotson blocked a field-goal attempt to help set up their winning field goal. Baylor could be a dark-horse team.
– Upset of the week: Central Michigan`s 20-3 victory over No. 18 Michigan State. What first seemed to be a misprint was a bitter reality for the Spartans. This can`t help George Perles` chances of keeping his dual role as coach and athletic director.
– Flop of the week: See above. It`ll be hard to top what Michigan State did Saturday. And Notre Dame isn`t a Central Michigan, which may or may not be a blessing.
– Quote of the week: ”God was on our side this time,” said Michigan quarterback Elvis Grbac after the Wolverines beat Notre Dame 24-14 to break a four-game losing streak against the Irish.
– Looking ahead: Washington travels to Nebraska for a prime-time showdown. Brigham Young still is looking for its first victory, but it won`t be easy to get at Penn State.
