Plaids may be classic, but they`re also big, in-your-face patterns. Keep that in mind when you`re staring longingly at that vivid Kelly green plaid suit. Go ahead, try it on. But don`t be surprised if you look like a tartan Miss Piggy.

A few words to the plaid-wise:

– Linda Evangelista may look sensational in a leather biker jacket and plaid kilt that grazes the crotch, but most of us wouldn`t. Skip plaid pleats unless you`re a svelte 5 feet 9 inches tall, and forgo boxy tartan jackets if you`re broad-shouldered.

– Unless you`re 14 years old or younger, or look like a Ford model, forget about kilts.

– Queen Elizabeth can get away with plaid eveningwear-it`s her heritage, after all-but on the hoi polloi it looks costumey. (It will also scream ”last season” next year.)

– Plaid casual wear-flannel shirts, pants, baseball jackets-have a longer style life than, say, a plaid scuba suit.

– Plaid scarves and shawls are good, wear-for-several-seasons investments, while a slim plaid dress or skirt, worn with a solid jacket, is a fine choice for work.
