Robeson rained 20 first-quarter points on Tilden Friday afternoon and then puddle-jumped to a 34-0 Public League Central Division victory at Gately Stadium.
Terry Jones, Michael Williams and Damion Henderson combined for 239 yards and all five of the visiting team`s touchdowns, and Jamal Taylor recorded 1 1/ 2 sacks to lead Robeson.
”I was very pleased with our first 10 minutes when we took control, but we kind of relaxed,” said Raiders head coach Roy Curry. ”It seemed like we didn`t want to play anymore.”
Henderson led Robeson with 138 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. But Curry chose to ignore the stats after the game.
”Damion runs when he wants to run, and I was a little disappointed with his performance,” he said. ”We`ll need a better game from him next week if we`re going to get past Dunbar.”
Robeson`s leading rusher opened the scoring barely a minute and a half into the game. Capitalizing on a Tilden fumble, Henderson scored on the next play, sweeping in from 10 yards out.
The conversion failed, but the Raiders soon returned to the end zone the conventional way.
Richards 30, Reavis 6-Dave Kenebrew ran for two first-half scores and threw for another as Richards (5-0, 2-0), the Tribune`s No. 1-ranked team, rolled to a 28-0 halftime lead in the SICA North. Kenebrew (59 yards on three rushes) broke scoring runs of 9and 47 yards and also hit Darrell Mitchell with a 54-yard TD strike. Marvin O`Neal added a 34-yard run before halftime.
”It was nice to see our team play a good first half,” said Richards coach Gary Korhonen. ”And our defense played really well tonight.”
Reavis (1-4, 0-3) was held to 95 total yards.
Phillips 8, King 0-Coach Carl Bonner, who plans to retire at the end of the season after 26 years at Phillips, got his first victory of the year as DeShone Tripplett`s 3-yard touchdown dash with 1:25 left in the game culminated an eight-play, 60-yard drive by the Wildcats (1-4, 1-1 in the Public Central).
Bradley 28, Crete-Monee 8-Conrad Coleman (eight carries, 118 yards) had two first-quarter touchdowns to power Bradley (5-0, 1-0) in the SICA South. Matt Bryant caught a TD pass from Mike Kohl and Jason Bargen had a three-yard scoring run. Mark Kohl picked off four passes for Bradley in the first half.
Kelvyn Park 6, Wells 0 (OT)-David Claudio`s 3-yard touchdown run in overtime carried Kelvyn Park (3-1, 3-1) to the Public League North-South win. Orlando Pagan had 70 yards on 18 carries and defensive end Rafael Ortiz was a terror with five solo tackles, two quarterback sacks and three fumble recoveries, including one in overtime that ended Wells` scoring threat. Wells dropped to 0-4, 0-4.
Peotone 9, Watseka 6-A safety and Ray Thatcher`s 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was the difference as Peotone (4-1) prevailed in a battle of independents.
North Boone 38, Pearl City 0-Dan Cleland snared 8- and 10-yard touchdown passes and John Barker (20 carries, 155 yards) added a 25-yard touchdown run to lead North Boone (5-0, 1-0) in an Upstate Illini opener.
Forreston 15, Byron 0-Ben Scheffner scored on a 1-yard run and Doug Tobin scored on a 20-yard run as Forreston (3-2, 1-1) rolled in a Big Northern White Division match.
