Most of the time, I, Napoleon comes on like a hard rock band, but it also shows shades of the Replacements on the opener, ”Perfect Absolution,” with its steady, hard-hit snare and ”I`ll Be You” melody. At times, the group verges on metal: ”Sweet Cyanide” sounds like Judas Priest without the flamboyance. The best song, ”Love/Hate,” is fast and angry. Although this debut was written and produced by vocalist Steve Napoleon, Dave Imondi`s drumming is the crucial element.
