Glenview may soon change its longstanding policy of charging residents on the west side of town higher water rates than those on the east side. But both sides will pay more.
Village trustees gave initial endorsement Tuesday night to a consolidated water rate of $2.50 per 1,000 gallons for all residents. The board must vote again for the ordinance to become law.
”We are one village, and the sooner we quit talking about the east side of town or the west side the better it will be for everyone,” Village President James Smirles said.
East siders pay $1.99 per 1,000 gallons and west siders pay $2.41. The new rate will increase water revenues by 6.2 percent overall to offset a price hike recently imposed by Wilmette, which supplies Glenview.
The practice of charging higher rates in the west began in the 1970s to cover the cost of new mains to deliver water to the far part of the village.
Residents in unincorporated areas served by Glenview will continue to pay a higher rate, $4 per 1,000 gallons.
