It troubles me to see words like ”cynical, calculating and B.S.-ing”

associated with Digger Phelps and the Notre Dame basketball program (Nov. 13, ”Courtship of Tom Kleinschmidt”). Whatever you think of Phelps` abilities as a coach or his personal charisma, he had his players` best interests at heart. If the players didn`t attend class, they didn`t practice; if they didn`t practice, they didn`t play. Extensive tutoring was available for the student-athletes. That`s why practically all the Notre Dame players-white or black-graduated.

To answer Tom Kleinschmidt`s question (”What happens if I came in and broke my foot?”): You`d just keep going to class like the rest of the students.
