Field Trip
Ripe (Slash) (STAR)(STAR) 1/2
Field Trip`s energy and enthusiasm are as contagious as a case of the chickenpox in a kindergarten classroom. Too bad the album isn`t consistent.
”Ripe” combines elements of metal, country and new wave with a local bar band sound. Jim Galbraith`s catchy, twanging guitar hooks and gawky vocals help define the band`s playful personality, occasionally bringing to mind the Young Fresh Fellows. Never mind the band`s novelty cover of Dead or Alive`s disco hit ”You Spin Me Around (Like a Record)”-not much in terms of raw material to begin with. Instead, treat yourself to ”Ballad of Field Trip,”
where Galbraith recalls his youthful dream of being in a rock `n` roll band, with all its noble intentions: ”we wouldn`t do it for the money, we`d do it/ cause it`s in our hearts.” This might sound corny, but Field Trip makes it sound like a plain fact.
