Teenage Fanclub
Bandwagonesque (DGC) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
For many alternative-rock listeners, Teenage Fanclub`s 1990 debut on the cooler-than-thou Matador label, ”A Catholic Education,” was the record of the year. ”Bandwagonesque,” the Scottish band`s major-label debut, should inspire similar frothing at the mouth. It`s loaded with dark melodies played at medium tempos, fuzzy-but not ear-splitting-guitars, and relaxed vocals, abetted by delicious harmonies. Very often the quartet recalls Alex Chilton`s old group, Big Star, and its penchant for making even the lightest melodies sound substantial, haunting-a neat trick that makes this terrific record sound better with every listen.
