Dan Larson took 22 shots in Hersey`s 82-72 win over Conant Friday night, but two stood out in terms of impact and momentum.
With Hersey trailing 56-54 entering the fourth quarter, Larson (22 points on 13 of 22 shooting) drained two quick baskets to give the Huskies (3-1) a lead they would never relinquish. Hersey ripped off a 9-0 run and continued to ride Larson`s hot hand to a 20-4 spurt that gave the Huskies a 74-60 lead with 3:33 to play.
”In the fourth quarter, our kids made the right decisions in looking up the floor and finding the open areas and the open men,” said Hersey coach Don Rowley.
Mike Brown scored 10 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and Jason Matthews finished with 12. Conant (2-2) was led by George Credle`s 23 points, including five three-pointers, and Brett Sharkey, who scored 20.
Warren 56, Fenton 39-Eight players scored at least four points for Warren (3-1, 1-0) in the North Suburban, led by Craig Shelton`s 12.
C.L. South 64, Woodstock 50-Jim Dorff (17 points), Eric Nawraeaj (16) and Chris Hunt (10) hit double figures for Crystal Lake South (3-2, 1-0) in the Fox Valley win.
Fenwick 60, Brother Rice 53-Adam Kotowski and Chris Jones each scored 13 points and Fenwick (3-1, 1-0) battled back in the fourth quarter to win its Catholic League opener.
Barrington 54, Schaumburg 50-Marc Wilson had 16 points, Mark Post 13 and Ryan Schumaker 11 as the Broncos (1-3) won the Mid-Suburban crossover. Barrington`s Travis Brown scored all seven of his points in the fourh quarter, when the Broncos pulled out of a 37-37 tie after three quarters. Ryan Black had 17 points for Schaumburg (2-2).
Marian Central 65, Grayslake 48-Mark Stilling had 14 and Chris Hyland 13 as Marian (3-2, 2-0) won the Northwest Suburban game. Grayslake (2-3, 0-2)
played without Chris Vaughn (dislocated kneecap, out indefinitely). Paul Goodling led Grayslake with 12.
Buffalo Grove 46, Hoffman Estates 35-Kevin Scott (14 points) and Eric Peterson (12) sparked Buffalo Grove (1-3) to the non-conference win.
