Mercedes-Benz of North America said it sold 58,868 cars in 1991, down about 25 percent from the 78,375 sold in 1990. The company blamed the decline on the weak economy and the luxury tax that took effect Jan. 1, 1991. The company said December sales were 4,756, down about 49 percent from 9,158 a year earlier. However, it noted that year-earlier sales were unusually strong, with customers apparently seeking to buy before the tax took effect.
