Dow tells loss, shutdowns: Dow Chemical Co. said Tuesday it will report a loss for the fourth quarter because of a one-time $370 million charge to cover costs of shutting down plants in Canada and divesting other businesses. About 400 jobs will be affected, but the number of layoffs is uncertain, a spokesman said. In addition to the shutdown of facilities in Canada, plants in Pittsburg, Calif., Germany and Brazil will phase out production of certain chlorine-based products.
