As presidential election-year hyperbole begins, let`s not be swayed by

”quick solutions” proposed to jump-start the economy.

A tax cut won`t do it; it would merely save each household a couple of hundred dollars. A cut in the capital gains tax won`t do it; it would merely be an unfair windfall for the rich.

One measure that would help the economy by generating consumer confidence is honesty on the campaign stump. If a candidate speaks in favor of a balanced federal budget, for example, he should also tell us exactly how he would propose balancing the budget. Or if a candidate promotes a national health care system, he should also tell us what the cost is going to be and how he proposes paying for it.
