Village trustees voted 4-1 Monday to gather more information about the safety of treating liquid from the garbage dump in the Mallard Lake Forest Preserve, which borders Hanover Park, officials said.
The dump`s owner, the Du Page County Forest Preserve District, needs to find a way of treating the liquid, called leachate, that oozes from the dump. The Forest Preserve District is willing to pay Hanover Park-or any other suitable town-to treat the leachate in its village sewage system.
Hanover Park trustees, however, fear such treatment might lead to environmental damage. The trustees decided Monday to have village
representatives meet soon with forest preserve staff to learn more about the safety of leachate treatment and disaster recovery plans.
