What does Eugenia Sidereas want out of a movie? More than I usually get. What I really want is excitement, suspense, intelligent dialogue and writing
(and a really hot male lead doesn`t hurt either). One could say that I am demanding-and one would be right.
”Shining Through” met almost all of my expectations, and was a surprisingly entertaining movie. Melanie Griffith stars as Linda Voss, a secretary and movie buff in 1940`s New York. Her half-Jewish, German background turns out to be surprisingly useful to her and to her boss, Edward Leland, a lawyer whose suspicious behavior foreshadows his real identity
(portrayed by Michael Douglas-my requisite hot male lead). Linda maneuvers her way into clandestine spy missions in Germany, and into Ed`s heart.
Though the plot is a bit contrived, and Melanie Griffith almost replays her role from ”Working Girl,” this film was exciting and had plenty of sappy romance (I`m big on sap). John Gielgud, Liam Neeson and Joely Richarsdon also had strong supporting roles as German spies and dougle-agents. My one problem with ”Shining Through” was the portrayal of the Nazis as cartoonish, bad guy caricatures. (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) for a movie reminiscent of old-time Hollywood spy thrillers. Till next time, oh faithful readers!
