Wisconsin-Green Bay basketball prospect Tory Smith was in jail Wednesday, accused of being part of a drug-selling operation that involved a Milwaukee supplier and local dealers communicating on electronic pagers.
Smith, a 20-year-old sophomore guard who was being redshirted this season, was arrested Tuesday on warrants charging him with three counts of being party to the crime of delivering cocaine and one count of conspiracy.
Authorities said Smith provided cocaine to two dealers who then sold the drug to an undercover police officer in Green Bay.
The sales allegedly took place Jan. 6, Jan. 9 and Jan. 13 and the incident on which the conspiracy charge was based took place Jan. 21.
Bond was set at $25,000 when Smith appeared in Brown County Circuit Court Tuesday. His preliminary hearing was scheduled Monday.
”Tory has steadfastly maintained his innocence,” said coach Dick Bennett after meeting with Smith. Nonetheless, Smith was suspended from the team.
