I would like to offer my suggestion for resolving the controversy over renaming Vincennes Avenue in honor of Alex Haley (Tribune, Feb. 13).
For openers, Vincennes Avenue is in reality two different streets. One street runs at about 500 east from 35th to 51st Streets, and the other runs southwesterly from about 69th and Lafayette. Only the north-south street should be renamed. This street is predominantly residential and a name change will inconvenience only a few people, mainly residents. Also this street serves an area which is part of the historic ”black belt,” whereas the other street runs through an area which became predominantly black within the last 35 years.
Another point I would like to make is that the author`s full name should not be on the street signs. Haley Drive is enough to honor the late author.
