Mum on merger: Gulf States Utilities Co. says it can`t identify possible merger candidates with whom it is negotiating. The Beaumont, Texas, utility said a committee is studying alternatives. Possible merger partners include:
Central & South West Corp. of Dallas; Houston Industries Inc. of Houston;
Entergy Corp. of New Orleans; and Southern Co. of Atlanta. A Southern spokesman said the company had concluded last year not to pursue a combination with Gulf States.
