As a voter whose name is on the local Democratic Party`s mailing list, I received 31 pieces of campaign literature from various candi-dates who ran in the primary.
Analyzing that mail from an environmental viewpoint pro-duced some interesting findings. The largest volume was received from Al Hofeld`s campaign-no surprise there. Of the six pieces, four were glossy, four-page flyers and two were multipage letters with reply cards. Not one item was printed on recycled paper, nor was two-sided printing used.
Of the 16 candidates, only one printed material on recycled paper-that was Carol Moseley Braun. Her supporters also used such ”green” campaign tools as the personal phone call, of which I received three.
A handful of candidates saved paper and mailing costs by using two-side printing or photocopying; most notable among those were Bill Clinton and Alan Dixon.
With the public outcry to reduce, reuse, recyle, shame on the other candidates and their wasteful practices!
