Reflecting continued strength in U.S. orders, the semiconductor industry`s key barometer, the book-to-bill ratio, jumped to 1.10 in April from a revised 1.07 in March. April orders were $1.57 billion, up 4.8 percent from $1.50 billion in March, and were 7 percent higher than in April 1991, said the Semiconductor Industry Association. April billings, meanwhile, rose 2.1 percent, to $1.43 billion from $1.40 billion in March, and were 11.5 percent higher than a year earlier. The figures are based on a three-month moving average. A book-to-bill ratio of 1.10 means that $110 of orders were received for every $100 of shipments. A ratio exceeding one-to-one indicates the industry is expanding.
