If Douglas Kneeland (”Pizza story ignited a firestorm of protest from offended readers,” April 23) is sincere in listening ”to the voices of our readers,” then it is hoped that he will expand his horizons to include those of us who are appreciative readers without an axe to grind.

We live in a melting pot of humanity-many races, many customs, many ideals. We learn to live with this mix and thoroughly enjoy the variety, but there are no select few.

So I deplore the possibility that the writers I read should have their creativity beaten to a pulp by editors who coddle, sift and strain their words down to a mishmash to appease one griping segment of any populace.

It`s a grim world out here; we are saved in part by the excel-lent writers who offer sage ob-servations, a bit of wry here and there, and wisps of humor. Learning to live in a democracy isn`t helped by appeasement from the press.
