Those Kris Kross kids finally did it. After more than a month of threatening to take away the top spot on the album charts from Def Leppard`s

”Adrenalize,” the duo`s debut record, ”Totally Krossed Out,” this week easily moved up from No. 2 to give the young rapsters yet another No. 1 title- and drop the hard-rocking ”Adrenalize” down to No. 2 after five weeks as champs.

The teen team of Chris Smith and Chris Kelly already have had an impressive run at No. 1 on the pop singles list with their first record,

”Jump,” which swept to its fifth straight week in the top spot. ”Jump”

also is threatening on the R&B singles list, where it zipped from No. 4 to No. 2 this week and now trails only ”My Lovin` ” by the San Francisco quartet of En Vogue.

En Vogue`s sassy song also is Kris Kross` biggest competition on the pop singles list, where ”Jump” and ”My Lovin` ” have been 1-2 for two straight weeks and likely will battle it out again next week.

However, there now is a strong new challenger in the picture-the Red Hot Chili Peppers` `70s-flavored ”Under the Bridge,” which burst into the Top 5 with a strong move from No. 6 to No. 3. (The Peppers also continue to hold down the No. 3 spot on the albums list with ”Blood Sugar Sex Magik.”) But, with ”Jump” and ”My Lovin` ” so strong, it`s unlikely that ”Bridge” will get any higher.

In fact, the rest of the Top 10 is quite weak, with no apparent No. 1 contenders and only two other songs that even made small gains: Joe Public`s

”Live and Learn” (from No. 5 to No. 4) and Michael Jackson`s ”In the Closet” (from No. 12 to No. 10).

That should leave plenty of room for two songs farther down in the Top 20 that again made big moves this week: Seattle rapster Sir Mix-A-Lot`s ”Baby Got Back,” which leaped from No. 17 to No. 12 and should breeze into the Top 10 next week; and Genesis` ”Hold On My Heart,” which in just its fourth chart week soared to No. 19 on the pop list and already is in its second week at No. 1 on the adult contemporary list.

Another song doing well on two lists is Celine Dion`s big ballad ”If You Asked Me To,” now No. 18 in pop and No. 3 in adult contemporary in just its fifth chart week. There`s also room for this one to make a quick flight into the Top 10.

But next week, look for all the action to be between ”Jump” and ”My Lovin` ”-with ”My Lovin` ” possibly establishing just enough of an edge in radio airplay to finally take one No. 1 title away from Kris Kross.

This week`s pick hit-and it will be an instant smash-is the star-studded

”The Best Things in Life,” whose cast of singers includes Janet Jackson and Luther Vandross. This one has ”No. 1” written all over it.
