Moses Turner`s guest column (Op-Ed, July 7) on student-teacher bonding would be more easily facilitated if we had two types of universities. A teaching type and a research type.
The teaching one should require education courses of their instructors to learn how to teach. The teacher would be the ”involved faculty” that Mr. Turner so ardently desires. Grants for such teachers would have to be on other than the ”publish or die” approach that the research professor is faced with.
The research professor has his place in opening up new worlds and improving the old ones. He could be drawn on for specific lectures or demonstrations. But the transmission of his findings to the next generation should be by teachers-the kind that communicate and motivate their students to still higher levels.
