Growth in demand for non-traditional, non-hospital based nurses by insurance and drug firms is helping increase enrollment at nursing schools nationwide, says Mary Ann McDermott, R.N., assistant dean at Loyola University Chicago. For hospital-based nurses, one draw is scheduling that treats two 12-hour weekend shifts as a 40-hour workweek, she says, allowing facilities to cover weekend shifts while allowing nurses week days with the family.
