A 36-year-old Lake Villa man was killed early Sunday when a drunken driver veered across the center lane and ran head-on into his vehicle.
Michael Nicholls, whose address was not available, was westbound on Grand Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. when the accident occurred. He was pronounced dead at 2:20 a.m., said Lake County Coroner Barbara Richardson.
The driver of the eastbound vehicle, whose name was withheld by police, was flown by helicopter to Milwaukee County Hospital, where he was in critical condition Sunday evening, a spokeswoman said.
Police said they have gone through six aliases trying to identify the man, and now believe he is a fugitive, said Lake County Sgt. Greg Guntharp. The man`s blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit, Guntharp said, but he would not provide specifics.
